Kirsty Akers is the name hot on everyone's lips at the moment releasing her first independent album Naked Kirsty has been a big part of the Australian country music scene and now she is stepping out on her own with a new style that is winning her new fans and critics alike.
This week sees singer-songwriter Kirsty Akers new single with Bob Evans, ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ hit the #1 spot on the AirIt chart ahead of Seeker Lover Keeper and Josh Pyke, the first track to be lifted off her brand new album ‘Naked’. She will be featuring the single and many more songs off the album while on tour later this month with Jace Everett (USA).
We asked Kirsty a few questions about her new album and upcoming tour.
How did the duet with Bob Evans come about?
I Saw Bob Evans open for Keith Urban at a concert and got in touch with him and it all just happened from there.
Both the song and video for In Spite Of Ourselves is amazing how did you come up with the Muppet concept?
Jason Millhouse who is the director of the video came up with the muppets, I didn’t want the typical two people singing to each other and I was so happy the results.
Can you tell us a bit more about your new album ?
It’s called Naked it came out on July 15 I have been working for a year and a half, writing the songs and about 6 months recording them. co-wrote with Melody Pool. With this album I didn’t have to rush this is the first one I have done independently without a record company telling me what to do.
I made all the decisions, choosing all the songs, it’s all me this album and I have been dying to do this one and get the real Kirsty Akers out this year.
Who are your influences for this album?
I grew up listening to full on country stuff Dolly Parton is my biggest inspiration, Johnny Williams have had a huge influence on my for the country side of thing. I have also
gone towards more rootsy artists mumford and sons Brandi Carlisle. Need to Breathe am a big fan of their stuff.
Are you touring this year?
New tour starting in August with Jase Everett who sings the theme song for True Blood. I never watched the show before I found out he was the singer and now I am a huge fan.
The first show is at the Basement in Sydney.
What’s next after the tour?
I am heading over to the USA in October playing at the Americana festival, I am also releasing the next video for Naked, the single is called “Where’s Lonely Found” and it will be out in a month or two.
Kirsty has been marked as an act to watch since she first came on the scene as a 17 year old winning the prestigious TRTT song writing competition which saw her ensconced in LA and Nashville for writing sessions with a number of hit-making songwriters. Although only 23 years of age Kirsty has been making an impact in her native Australia for the past seven years. Hailed as a remarkable talent by fellow artists, musicians, media and stalwarts of the music industry Kirsty is fearless and brutally honest with a penchant for taking her songs to places others fear to tread.
