Think Bigger - Cosmo Jarvis

Our favourite british boy is coming back to Australia and we could not be more excited! With a brand new album and promo tour Cosmo Jarvis is set to hit our shores in July!

A down-to-earth maverick talent, Cosmo Jarvis was born in New Jersey to an Armenian-American artist mother and an English sea captain father.  The family moved to the UK when he was very small and Cosmo spent his formative years with his mother in Totnes, Devon after his parents split in initially acrimonious circumstances.  His teens were spent sparring with her and getting up to all manner of small town trouble. He also developed a sideline in writing songs and making films. By the time he was in his late teens local appreciation had bloomed into a MySpace and Youtube following. Now a one man word-of-mouth industry who might just be about to receive the recognition he deserves, Cosmo’s work is unique, forthright, human and involving.  He’s an artist, in other words, who’s proving truly exciting to follow

Aged only 22, Cosmo Jarvis will release his third album Think Bigger on July 6.  Love This, the lead single from the album is out now and already sitting in the Top 20 Itunes Alternative chart! Cosmo will arrive in Sydney on 23 July for two weeks visiting Sydney and Melbourne for album launches and instores.

His music and films have made him an online phenomenon with hisYouTube shorts, usually observational comedy skits about small town life, being viewed almost three million times – his contagious shanty single ‘Gay Pirates’,  picking up over a million hits alone.  It also made it into triple j’s hottest 100 this year.

The last two albums (Humasyouhitch/Sonofabitch and Is The World Strange Or Am I Strange? ),  have seen Cosmo hightail between many musical styles, but the new album, Think Bigger, sees Cosmo adhere to a singer-songwriter template tinged with alt-country sensibilities and a string section sourced from Ebay. This is Cosmo Jarvis though, so it’s never straightforward or predictable- everything is imprinted with his personality and imagination.

Excited to see the next album's direction after the release of the first single "Love This" which became an instant hit with us, we got the lowdown on what is happening with the rest of the album. The tone of the album maintains a steady musical course the subject matter on Think Bigger is intriguingly varied.  There’s the roaring folkabilly of ‘Sunshine’ about contemporary society’s damaging sense of entitlement; the poignant elegy for ‘The Girl From My Village’ (“about my loathing at the fact she was taken when others who I am certain will do less good with their lives are allowed to keep on breathing”); whilst single-in-waiting ‘Train Down Town’ is about a dystopian future akin to one of Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’ satirical drama.  Even the love song ‘Lacie’ is revealed as an ode to Cosmo’s computer’s external hard drive - “because I am unable to express how thankful I am that while I sleep the contents of my brain are being guarded.”

Jarvis's last album Is The World Strange Or Am I Strange was our number 1 rated album for 2012 and we look forward to hearing the latest that he has to offer, something we have come to expect is the unexpected, and always something fresh and invigorating to shake up the music industry.

Our review will be up as soon as we can get our hands on the album!

Wide Awake - Katy Perry

Katy Perry is at it again, gone away with the cuties gimmicks and sexy outfits this time around, you can tell she is trying to be taken even more serious as an artist.

Not content with use another film clip of here parading around in skimpy latex outfits, this film clip seems to have a story and a message, and that message seems to be that she does struggle with the fame and attention that she is getting these days.

We follow Katy battling her own problems while guiding her younger self to safety, though it seems that her younger self is doing an even better job at saving the older Katy.

It was an interesting choice of film clip for this song because up until now this song seemed to be about seeing things clearly after a relationship, but with this clip it could be seen as a song about seeing things more clearly in relation to who she is and where she is at in her career.

The song musically isn’t too bad, it shows that when needed Katy can focus on a message, rather than try to write something that is just fun and is a powerful enough singer to pull that off and get her message across.

It is a song that will definitely be played by every teenage girl going through a break up and need something to cry alone to until they feel stronger, which at the end of the day, teenage girls are the biggest part of her target market, so she really nailed exactly what her fans want from her, while still writing a song that meant something to her.

This Is Love - Will.I.Am feat. Eva Simons

OK so Will.i.am sitting at a piano, singing a power ballad, that’s enough to scare anyone right? Don’t worry though, it is the whole song and before too long his jumped right back into the mix of dance/hip hop that we have come to know and love from him.
Despite the introduction that had me scared that this was the sound the whole song was going to have and the fact that it does cut back into this sound again later in the song, this song is really good. It’s nothing short of the fun dance floor anthem that we have been looking for, while still writing a song that doesn’t become boring and interest is lost after the 1st few minutes of the song.
Will.i.am’s vocals still have a bit too much auto tune to really say if his any good or not, but once he gets back to doing what he does best and rapping, it becomes pretty clear this man knows what he is doing.
The film clip to go with the song still confuses me though, I can’t work out the point of the laptops all over the place at all and where in the world do you find parties or clubs like that?
If somebody knows the answer to that can they let me know, because I want to go there?
If this song focused a lot more on the dance/hip hop parts than the slow piano parts then this song would have been perfect, but it doesn’t. Though if you can sit through the boring parts of the song there are some really good bits.

Celebrate - Mika feat Pharrell Williams

Mika is back with a hot new single titled Celebrate to be taken from his third album Origin of Love. The Grace Kelly singer has teamed up with Pharrell Williams (who makes a brief but noteworthy appearance in the song) the song is a shining ray of positivity.

The song is produced by Empire Of The Sun's Nick Littlemore and sounds like a cut from the Pet Shop Boys, but in a good way. Take a listen below

Blackout announced into the Rock n Roll hall of fame!

It has been a long time coming, Blackout was always our favourite Britney album and now it has been confirmed with Blackout being added to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. This is the first time any of Ms.Spears albums have been awarded this honour but if you have listened to this album you will clearly see why.

The critically acclaimed album was released during the breakdown of her personal life but heralded some of the best music she has ever produced. The album saw singles like "Gimme More, Piece Of Me, Radar, Toy Soldier and Break The Ice"

This is long overdue, and with Spears taking a year off making music to focus on X Factor and other projects it is good to see her previous work being recognised for its brilliance.

Love This - Cosmo Jarvis

Cosmo Jarvis is back with a hot new song and video! Titled 'Love This' the song is catchy showcasing that Jarvis can adapt to any music style and make it his own. Love This is the first single from his much anticipated album Think Bigger set for release on July 6.

We do have an insight into the new album which we are all excited to listen to. "Whilst the tone of the album maintains a steady musical course the subject matter on Think Bigger is intriguingly varied.

The video features Jarvis dressed as a tight suited devil with 2 angels by his side. The simple and cleverly shot video stands out as one of his best, the song has been in high rotation on Triple J and the video has reached 50,000 views in its first week. Check out the video to Love This below!

Heartbreak On Hold - Alexandra Burke

One of our favourite UK singers Alexandra Burke is back with a hot new look and album. The album is her second after winning X Factor in the UK and showcases just why this beautiful and extremely talented singer won the competition.

After a string of hits with "Bad Boys, All Night Long and Start Without You" this time around Burke takes the disco diva route and showcases her impressive vocals with some hot dub step, disco infused goodness. Our review of the album will be up shortly, but for now here is the title track "Heartbreak On Hold" check it out below

Sweat - Ciara

A new record label, getting rid of the Dream who has only produced utter crap for the extremely talented Ciara, things are finally looking good. Ciara's move to record label Epic Records and new producers Hit-Boy, Soundz, Dianne Warren, Tricky Stewart and The Underdogs. The album is going to be called "One Woman Army"

The song features rapper 2 Chainz and is a dance pop cut that has some old school urban flavour that Cee-Cee's music has been missing lately. This is not the best comeback song but it is a step in the right direction. Check out the song below

Owl City EP Review

I know what this is, this new EP from ‘Owl City’ is what happens when ‘Angels and Airwaves’ meets ‘Death Cab for Cutie’ and works out well.

Well I say that , but actually that is how ‘Owl City’ has always sounded to me, not just this EP
There is something about the vocals that always makes me think that this is actually a death cab side project and there is nothing wrong with that .Adam makes this vocal style work in a style of music that I didn’t think it would.

For me the stand out track on this EP was the title track ‘Shooting Stars’, it is catchy , fun and will, like his last hit, most likely be mixed into every club mix around the world. But it is still a powerful song and remains interesting and keeps you hooked the whole way through.

The big thing to note on this EP though is the guest vocals of Mark Hoppus of ‘Blink 182’ , but don’t get any hopes up that this is going to be the biggest song in the world or anything, Mark really doesn’t do much and the song itself sounds more like an ‘Angels and Airwaves’ B-side track than Owl City has ever before.

I know I said that to me it has always sounded that way to me, but this is more that way.
Before it was just the sounds that the synths used and how they were used, but this song moves further into that sound, with similar drumming style and guitar parts, even the echo effects on the vocals are straight from the pages of “epic sounding song writing” by Tom DeLonge.
If the upcoming album is more like the track ‘shooting stars’ then this is one to watch for, as it will no doubt be dominating the charts like a school yard bully.
