Q&A with Mildlife

You may remember we introduced you to Mildlife the melbourne based band a few weeks ago, we have been fortunate enough to have been given a Q&A with the band. We asked them about their upcoming album and possible tour. Mildlife have just confirmed an upcoming show on the 30th of March in Sydney at The Standard! Check out the Q&A below!

Who are your inspirations musically
At the moment we're really getting into a lot of work by a producer called Joe Meek. He was a pretty weird dude making some pretty incredible stuff in the 50s and 60s, a fair way ahead of his time. I guess we’re always looking for new sounds and ideas to draw from but it just so happens these days it’s the old sounds and more primitive production techniques that are really inspiring us.

What are you listening to right now
Well a lot of Joe Meek but also Peaking Lights, St Vincent, heaps of Ariel Pink, Silver Apples and Can is always in the mix.

What can we expect from the album.
Well it’s pretty early days at the moment but I guess we’re pretty in to exploring unusual techniques whether that’s production-wise or instrumentally. we just really want to create something with a unique sonic character. Something you can shake hip to. Something hypnotic.

There’s obviously a large visual element to what you do, not only in the live show but also across your website, what role does that play in the band?
I guess we’re all pretty visual people so it feels natural for us to marry up a visual element to the band. We really try to paint a vivid picture with each song, not so much lyrically, but with certain tones or sounds or production techniques. For us, a song is really working when we get this right.

Do you have any upcoming shows?
We’ve got a show in Melbourne on the 25th at the Tote and then one the following weekend (31st) at a Party in Sydney at the Standard.

Fusing live instruments together with electronica is no easy feat. How do you do it so flawlessly?
Cool, thanks. I guess we just think about the electronic aspect as another instrument. It’s definitely taken a bit of time to get it all working in harmony. I guess the key is not to rely on it too much. Just treat it as another part of the puzzle.

What was the worst pop song of 2011? and what was your favourite?
Really got in to ‘Shutterbugg’ by Big Boi. Such a bangin beat.
Worst pop song? I don’t know. Something by that Beeber guy? There were a few songs that talked about the weekend or Friday nights. They were all pretty bad i’m sure.

Who are you working with on the album production wise and what can we expect
We’re doing it all ourselves actually. Gives us more time to experiment with things and get things wrong without the pressure of time.

Part Of Me - Katy Perry

Gearing up for the release of Teenage Dream - The Complete Confection (still a title that makes me laugh every time I hear it) Katy Perry has recorded some new tracks. One of which is getting the single treatment by way of Part Of Me. The video was released yesterday and has been talked about a lot due to the themes of Katy's love interest in the video joining the army. Check out the video below

Girls Gone Wild - Madonna

Madonna has released the video for her second single off M.D.N.A titled Girls Gone Wild, the much anticipated video has now premiered as is already getting Ga Ga fans up in arms and confused about who did what first. Let me start by saying this video remind me a lot of Erotica the 1992 Madonna hit, which was then "re-invented" by Lady Ga Ga for Alejandro. Madonna has clearly drawn inspiration from Erotica and built upon it in the new video. Hot shirtless guys making out, Madonna dancing age appropriately while filmed in stunningly crisp black and white this video is the business! Check it out below

Wild Heart - Sabi

Britney's new favourite rapper Sabi has been making a name for herself in 2011 and has now finally released the video for her first solo sing "Wild Heart" the video is lush and fits the song perfectly. Check out the video below

Oprah Winfrey Interviews Lady Gaga

Oprah Winfrey takes a rare glance into Lady Gaga's house with her mother to launch the "Born This Way Foundation" a cause that is set out to make bullying illegal (good luck policing that) Check out the interview below

REVIEW - M.D.N.A Madonna

Madonna the original material girl, lucky star, centre of controversy and always a spectacle. After a 3 year break musically the un-disputed queen of pop is back with a brand new studio album. Breaking away from the commercialness of her previous album Hard Candy this time around Madonna creates her own style of music that is somewhere between American Life and Confessions blending electro pop with dance and raw instruments.

Superstar - this track is very reminiscent of American Life production wise with acoustic guitars synching with electro pop beats cruises with the catchy chorus of "Ooh Lah Lah you're my superstar" Complete with dub step breakdown this is the perfect direction for Madonna's music right now

Turn Up The Radio - another perfect track on this album it actually reminds me a lot of Cindi Lauper blending Madonna's sugary sweet vocals with an 80's synth melody complete with dance beat this is one of the highlights of the album

Gang Bang - my personal favourite song on this album this song is clouded with dark beats, sensual and crazy lyrics complete with gun shots and Madonna screaming "Drive Bitch! Die Bitch!" this could be representative of her feeling about her divorce but even if it doesn't this song should have been the standard for the album.

Love Spent - William Orbit really brings his best to this track. Video game sound effects, banjos, dub step beats all blend seamlessly with Madonna's vocals. This is definitely one to listen to

I'm Addicted - For me this song was like an eargasm listening to this through headphones. Madonna's 80s style vocals mixed with electro beats, synth with vocals like "I'm addicted to your love, your name pumps like the blood through my veins. Pulse through my body invading my mind like MDMA"

Girl Gone Wild - The second single produced by Benny Benassi this track is surprisingly not one of the strongest on the album. I have no idea why this was a single choice but it stands out as one of the weakest songs on the album

Falling Free - A definite nod to "Easy Ride" from American Life this is the best ballad Madonna has done since American Life. This track showcases the beauty of her voice, the pain and heartache of her divorce a topic that will come up more as the album goes on. The strings mix with electro noise blending together to make a surprising addition to MDNA

I Fucked Up - another nod to her recent divorce with lyrics like "I could have just kept my big mouth closed, I could have just done what I was told. I fucked up, I made a mistake. Nobody does it better than myself, I'm sorry I'm not afraid to say I wish I could take it back but I can't" this is another ballad esque style track

Masterpiece - the ballad version of the track kept for Madonna's movie W.E. this track surprisingly fits in to this album perfectly.

I'm A Sinner - William Orbit takes us back to Ray Of Light days and thumps this track out. This reminds us of why we love Madonna this deserves to be a single!

I Don't Give A (feat. Nicki Minaj) - This track reminded me a lot of American Life (the song) with a semi spoken rap and sung chorus. This track reminds us of the wild Madonna that we love. Hints at her bitter divorce with lyrics like "I tried to be a good girl, I tried to be your wife diminished myself and it swallowed my life" The guest rap from Minaj is the perfect addition to this track, the two work really well together. Interestingly enough some of the lyrics include "There is only one queen and that's Madonna bitch!" Could this be a snide dig at Ga Ga? We certainly hope so!

Some Girls - Orbit hits back again pulling the album into the Ray Of Light era and once again reinforcing Madonna's place as the queen of pop music in the past and today. The sound still sounds as fresh as it did back in 1997.

Overall this kicks Hard Candy in the arse and makes us believe that Madonna is STILL the queen of pop music something that I have echoed quite a bit through this review but the reunion with William Orbit and addition of Benassi, MIA and Minaj have delivered a lyrically stunning and revealing album mixed with hot new beats where Madonna fails to give in to current trends and make her own style of music. Madonna has done much more than Lady Ga Ga did on Born This Way, she did not announce this as the "album of a generation" it is simply Madonna doing what she does best, making hot music. This is the ultimate saving grace for this album it is unlike anything on the radio right now and thrusts Madonna back into the spotlight that was missing her so much. MDNA is released in Australia this Friday!

Every other blog seems intent on trashing the new collaboration for Birthday Cake the snippet Rihanna tacked onto her latest album Talk That Talk, while earlier this week talks of Christina Aguilera joining Rihanna for the much anticipated track it has finally been revealed that ex-boyfriend Chris Brown who has had domestic violence issues with Rihanna a couple of years ago. Most people seem to be angry that the two would team up again, personally the song is hot and their voices blend flawlessly together and the fact that they are both mature enough to team up for work to produce something of quality is great. To the nay-sayers who want to be negative we suggest you think about this. Have you ever done something wrong? Would you like everyone to hold it against you for the rest of your life and never give you another shot? Whilst we do not condone violence against ANYONE enough time has passed and obviously all is well between the pair. Focus instead on the hot track below!
